Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai ★★★★★

Yup. I get the hype. So good.

This is the third Kurosawa movie I’ve seen and it might be my favorite. It actually seems like a happy medium between the two I've seen, Yojimbo and Rashomon. I loved Yojimbo as entertainment for its engaging plot, characters and dialogue, and I loved Rashomon as a work of arthouse cinema with its innovative expressionist filmmaking and fascinating philosophical pondering. Seven Samurai seemed to employ the best of both worlds.

There are so many things to point to that I love. I love the score, very reminiscent of Stravinsky but with obvious Japanese influence. I love how the story seemed pretty simple/standard to begin with, but the themes and character depths unfolded themselves like the petals of a lotus. I loved how the film, even in its slower parts, kept my attention despite its 3.5 hour runtime. I could go on and on I’m only scratching the surface here.

I have no trouble recommending this to anyone and I can definitely see myself watching it many times in the future.

P.S. Pixar should be paying Kurosawa’s family some of the royalties. Just saying
