The Lighthouse ★★★★½

Keep the light burning. It really says something about how absolutely genius Eggers is when this kind of capsule story can be so cryptic and full of mythos, infused with a depth deeper than the blackest ocean void, but I more-so see this, in the same way as I do The Witch, as an extended mood of desperation. First, it was desperation for faith and whether a "God" could bring salvation if it were even there in the first place, but now it's a desperation for power and knowledge constrained by the isolation of being cut off from everyone and everything but yourself. The vibes are strong and intense, but the implications are much darker. The search for wisdom is fruitless, and the silence of being alone is deafening and even maddening. But above all, the inquisition of erudition and mastery is inherently doomed, a sentence to torture and punishment to those foolish enough to tread its path. Curiosity killed the cat, after all.
