it’s not up for debate—this is a masterpiece.
what i’d like to address is why people think it was not filmed and designed to be exactly as it is. mamma mia is a filmed live stage production, and that’s how it should be viewed. the notable overhead lighting is on purpose. the costuming is ecstatic. the camp edits are actually what ties this entire production together, existing like set pieces on the stage. on the screen amanda’s bed in greece becomes her husband’s room in NYC, they later trade off a mirror. of course, because they’re on the same stage.
this movie is exquisite, the perfect balance of obliteratingly careless fun with deeply empathetic themes & character exploration. it seems to accept that happiness is a set that you build for your life, not an inevitability. it’s never rote or too late to realize what you want most in life is to be with the people you love and who love you.
the year of amanda seyfried 😇
