The success of this kind of thing obviously depends a lot on how charismatic the interviewed subjects are, and Kokomo City does not disappoint on that front. But I also admire its visual artistry a lot; the striking black-and-white photography, the stylish subtitles accentuating some of its best moments, the way cross-cutting is used to build associations and emphasize moods, it's all just so very good. Complicated without being noncommittal, funny without being frivolous, important without solely relying on the weight of its heavy emotions.
