Kaurismäki's musical comedy roadtrip American dream satire succeeds by the virtue of its multimodality. The fun title cards and the whimsical episodes of physical & visual comedy complement each other perfectly; there's something very satisfying about how it's edited, with every joke taking just as much time it needs before cutting away. Between that and the musical performances, it uses every facet of its medium effectively, feeling pretty packed for its short runtime and patient delivery.
Special shoutout to how beautifully a lot of it is shot – you get a lot of nice roadtrip visuals, and Pellonpää's final scene is weirdly (and funnily) haunting.
