very much a proto-twin peaks. another reviewer suggested that the existence of peaks mostly negates the need for this film; i am inclined to agree. twin peaks explores almost every theme that blue velvet sets out to explore, but more thoroughly & with clearer purpose.
but, even if it is in a sense superfluous, blue velvet is a superfluous masterpiece. standout performances, especially from Dern (of course) and Hopper (but holy shit). an important step for Lynch, in retrospect. can’t believe it took me this long to finally watch this one.
