2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★★★

Seeing this on 70mm definitely adds a new dimension to the cosmic elements of this film, but it’s the tiny human details that benefit the most - Bowman’s face trembling and falling as he realizes what he’s doing to HAL, Dr. Floyd’s awkward video call with his daughter, and every little person on the edge of the frame during the Moon scenes living out their lives in the shadow of a greater drama. We remember Kubrick so often as a cold, calculating technician that it’s easy to forget the humanity that made his work so great in the first place. Also, I can’t think of a good ending for this review because my brain is still recovering from the Beyond the Infinite scene, so... yeah.
