Malignant

Malignant ★★★★

One of the rare times where I’m glad that a film got mismarketed; “James Wan giallo” is a perfectly fine pitch as far as I’m concerned, but this is vastly weirder than that implies (more Brian Yuzna than Argento, even), and I’m glad for it. Some people are absolutely going to hate the melodramatic, heart-on-its-sleeve tone here, but for me, it’s refreshing to see a modern horror film that leans so hard into camp without ever winking to the audience - sometimes sincerity is the best option, especially when it comes to the kind of grisly [REDACTED] soap opera Wan’s working in here. Between the high-energy camerawork and bloody blunt-force kills, it’s easy to see how much fun he’s having making this, and it’s hard not to get caught up in that relentless momentum. Someone give the stunt team on this film their own personal John Wick ASAP.
