Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi ★★★★★

“We are what they grow beyond. That is the burden of all true masters.”

It took me a little too long (okay, a LOT too long) to get to this rewatch, but good god, this one just seems to get better and better the more I think about it. Johnson’s storytelling never wastes a single beat - everything serves a purpose, whether it be amplifying the stakes or simply building emotion. Finn’s storyline in particular went over like gangbusters this time, especially because of how godawful and inaccurate people’s complaints about it are. I mean, who doesn’t want to see a politically charged sci-fi take on retro crime-gone-wrong movies set in space Monaco? Nobody else? Just me? Okay, fine. I still love this thing, though; it’s a weird, wonderful, retro-spirited incendiary firebomb of a blockbuster, unafraid to take a sledgehammer to tradition regardless of who’s going to whinge about it afterwards. (The Vertigo/Wild Bunch/Tokyo Drifter shout-outs don’t exactly hurt its case either. Just saying.)
