Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Terminator 2: Judgment Day ★★★★★

“Of all the would-be fathers who came and went over the years, this thing, this machine, was the only thing that measured up. In an insane world, it was the sanest choice.”

American action movies have always been somewhat mythical in nature, but this takes the concept to its extreme, tossing out the rah-rah jingoism of the Norris-Stallone era in favor of a duel for the fate of mankind that builds to a literal fire-and-ice climax. Beneath all of the mythology, though, this is a surprisingly vulnerable film; a subversive one, too, as it soundly rejects the fatalism of its predecessor’s ending in favor of Kyle Reese’s belief that “there is no fate but what we make”. This one has been a long time coming. It was worth the wait.
