Quinn Bailey’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Dreams fade away after you wake up.”
I don’t think I even have the right words to praise the insane narrative high-wire act Shinkai pulls off here - this packs all the content and depth of at least three different movies (and the twists of at least seven) into less than two hours, but it never feels rushed or overcomplicated, and it never loses its ability to deliver atomic bomb-level emotional gut punches. If Fury Road didn’t exist, this would be my favorite sci-fi movie of the twentieth century. I don’t want to wake up.
(Side note: if you are designing a drinking game for this movie, please don’t include “extreme closeups of doors opening and/or closing” in it. I don’t want you to land anyone in the hospital.)
