Quintin 📽 Philipson’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is officially #250 out of the top 1001 films list I've been watching. Which means after 14 months, I'm now 25% done!
You can look at my ranking of the films from the list here: Greatest Films of All Time
I picked this film for this moment because it's in the top 25 of the list and is considered one of Kubricks best. I unfortunately didn't love it as much as most people and consider it Kubricks worst so far but that doesn't take away from the fact that the film is pretty remarkable.
I don't enjoy space movies, I can't connect with a film that takes place in a spaceship or outer space; however, this is probably the best space movie made because it's not focusing on telling a story... it's focusing on creating an experience.
It's a beautiful looking film with some gorgeous shots. I found the first half dragged a lot but the second half was amazing. The second half alone was a 4.5 with its storytelling and visual ending, maybe on a rewatch I will appreciate the first half more and see the film the way everyone else seems to see it.
