Mission: Impossible III ★★★½

Clearly establishes the system that defines the next 3 films: an emphasis on the team, a yearning for Michelle Monaghan, Cruise stupidly risking his body in expansive set pieces, and Pegg being abjectly horrified by it. Except Abrams' nearly unbearable kineticism sucks the impact out of large portions, as his television-conditioned eye can't allow for the moments of quiet and tension that Bird and McQuarrie maximized.

Regardless, it contains a fucking boiling, essential performance from Phil Sy Horfman - so it should be treasured for the rest of time.
