Robert Sutton’s review published on Letterboxd :
Have you ever wanted to see a local Civil War re-enactment headlined by an Academy Award-winning actor? If that's the case, then Free State of Jones is the movie you've been looking for. There are a couple of battles and Matthew McConaughey is pretty solid, but after a promising start the movie keeps going in frustrating fits and starts.
The worst part is about the film is that it never seems to really resolve anything. Characters seem to come and go without warning. Villains who deserve some of punishment simply disappear. Battles the movie sets up never happen. WAY too much action happens off screen or in still photographs, sucking all dramatic tension from the picture.
Free State of Jones is totally watchable, but at the end of it you'll ask yourself why you'd wanted to in the first place.
