Portrait of a Lady on Fire

I'll start this off by saying that I haven't really been watching many movies lately - I've found it a little difficult to sit down and properly absorb something and often decide to watch TV instead. Has anyone else felt like this recently? With that being said, my wife and I decided it was finally time to put our foot down and watch Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I'm so incredibly glad we did.

    The beauty of this film…

For my money, it's one of the most charming films of all time. I'm not sure there's a moment of this film that I don't absolutely adore. Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach put together a fantastic script worthy of adapting Roald Dahl's book, and all of the voice actors put in their very best. Infinitely rewatchable.

Finally picked up the Criterion Blu-ray during the last flash sale and it's loaded with special features. A fantastic transfer, as well! Looked absolutely…

I didn't like this quite as much as Yojimbo, but still really enjoyed it. Toshirô Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai are just delightful together. Both films are wonderfully directed and pure entertainment through and through.

I almost feel like I’m doing something wrong, assigning this a rating the first time I watch it. I’m almost certain this will be something that I watch over the years and interpret differently each time. I’m strictly reserving this viewing to really feeling the film more than anything else and trying to digest it that way, as I’m not really in the headspace to try to dissect its meaning.

As an aside, I went outside for like 15 minutes just to sit with the calmness for a little bit to clear my mind. That’s some weird shit to watch in the middle of the day.

Damien... Keep making movies and I’ll keep buying tickets.

I enjoyed this movie for the same reasons why my wife didn’t enjoy it as much, and I completely understand both sides. This movie - while it does have emotional elements, is fairly hollow at its core. It spends more time on what happened instead of lingering too much on the who and why. If it wasn’t such an incredibly well directed movie, this would bother me a bit more.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I am so incredibly thrilled with this film. I could have easily walked out of the auditorium when we finished and walked straight into another to watch it again. This, for me, is not only one of the best animated movies in years - but one of the best superhero movies of all time. You could just feel the love that went into making this movie. It felt like a comic book was jumping off of the pages onto the screen…
