Near Dark

Near Dark ★★★★½

A love story between a country vampire girl and the country boy she nips in order to turn him so they can spend eternity together. The rural wide open spaces and small town bars and motels change the aesthetic from its gothic origins. The dialog matches it perfectly as her nomadic family are all southerners talking trash a lot but surviving incredibly precariously from one night to the next in stolen cars and a cool RV. Their sense of loyalty and endless cool wise cracks draws you to them even though they're vampires. It kind of works. The action is us on their rides through the night and it's all great. The country bar scene is even greater, a perfect mix of mayhem and even more awesome trash talkin'. Bill Paxton is the man. It launches the film kind of into its final act which has some tricks up its sleeve but they're cool.
