Phantom Lady ★★★★

A film with bigger ambitions than the time allowed; there are some moments so beautifully and boldly shot that ache to last longer than the technology permitted. While it has noir elements, the narrative construction is remarkably singular, running traditional detective work alongside a psychological mind game. Couple that with Siodmak’s crisp visual sensibilities, a spry and vibrant Ella Raines, and Franchot Tone’s hand-wringing creep, and you’ve got yourself a classic.
