    An infectious, joyful throwback to the Hollywood musicals of old, this Jacques Demy classic lacks the bittersweet punch of his masterpiece THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG but keeps you tapping your toes throughout. Of particular note is the film's use of color, masterfully used both as emotional denotation and vibrant set dressing.

    New thoughts on revisit: Really interesting ideas on the narratives we create for ourselves and others, and how they can lead to both denial, delusion and self-loathing. The confrontation at the naming party doesn't work quite as well as everything else, but there's so much good in the rest (particularly the harsh reverse ending) that it's easily forgiven.
