This is a remarkably edgy and honest film. I can only imagine the stir it caused in its day. It is rare even in modern times for a straight, female centric adultery story to be told. That this is happening in the 40’s challenging every social norm of conservative Britain is bold. I also loved the out of order nature being told backwards. Then adding her direct narrative voice was a nice touch. I did not rate the film higher because I think the ending (the second part) was disingenuous and took the punch out of the larger story.

This film is just ok to me. I am always a fan of Adrien Brody. He has that compelling, somber and pained mystique that is powerful to watch. I am also always on board when the great Sam Neil puts his hand to something. Neither of these two was enough to really drive this film though. It was retreading very familiar ground. Admittedly it did hodgepodge a few motifs together like the crime aspect with the psychological unraveling, all wrapped up in a Sixth Sense bow. Not bad, but far from great. Spend your two hours somewhere else is my advice.

A terrible remake of Sleeping with the Enemy combined with The Invisible Man. Why, why, why???

An extraordinary way to tell the story of searching for inner depth and meaning. Everything you think this story is trying to tell you gets turned on its head and becomes a searching way of holding up a mirror to the soul. Cage is completely in the cage, right where he belongs. His crazy can often shroud a story in bad acting weirdness. Not so here. He is painfully human. We need more of this pure cinema in our theaters! What a delight.
