“Let me get my Walkman.”
Gus Van Sant has made some incredible films, but this is not one of them. I knew I wasn’t gonna like this movie, but I was too curious to not watch it.
I’m not really sure what they were trying to accomplish making a shot for shot remake of a film that’s already perfect as is. The only difference is that this takes place in 1998, which actually makes it worse. (Exhibit A: the quote at the top).
I’m also not really a huge fan of the casting. Vince Vaughn was not at all the right person to play Norman Bates, and most of the actors seemed very uncomfortable in their roles. I do love William H. Macy and Julianne Moore though, so that helped.
Psycho (1998) is to Psycho (1960) as Jaws: The Revenge is to Jaws. Even though it’s not a remake, it’s terrible and it didn’t need to happen, much like this movie.
