Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ★★★

I really, really wish they had stuck with what they set up in the first 30 minutes, and gone with a personal family story with the true villain being a man who is stuck between his family and ‘saving’ his wife. As always though it has to turn into a huge spectacle with giant CGI creatures and fight scenes where I can’t tell what’s going on with all of the computer animation being shoved into my face.

The fight scenes without CGI are really well done, and to that effect this movie does have a good amount going for it. I loved almost the entire cast, but I have to say that Awkwafina was in this way too much. She was damn near a co-lead and yet there was 0 chemistry between her character and Shang-Chi, and almost all of her comedic relief lines are so flat and forced. There’s also just far too many unnecessary flashbacks. It makes the movie really dry and feel much longer than the actual runtime.

I certainly don’t hate it, for an origin story it does have a more free spirited feel. But with everyone saying this is a ‘breath of fresh air’, I expected something different.
