    Dead or Alive

    ★★★

Dead or Alive (1999) has some good things going for it, such as a classic gangster storyline and a badass lead with sunglasses and a pompadour. It's kind of too bad, because the character has the makings of one of those revered movie characters, but the inaccessibility of the film itself because of a couple of truly disturbing scenes ruin it. They aren't even consequential and seem to be the film maker, Takashi Miike reveling in gratuity. The ending of…

    Fast & Furious 6

    ★★½

Fast & Furious 6 (2013) - Totally serviceable but less noteworthy than most of them for being neither crazily over the top like Fast 5 nor comically douchey like some of the first ones. They undo a bunch of character stuff that I am pretty sure only happened because of one of the actors being disgraced but it's starting to show how a series so rooted in the ensemble "family" can be vulnerable to the chaos of the lives and relationships of all of the different actors involved. I'm sure it won't happen again. Current ranking: 5, 3, 6, 1, 4, 2

Old Henry (2021) is a tight western with a badass ending, charming but deadly villain, and unconventional lead who is in no short supply of gruffness. It's cool to see these old genres treated with modern immersive filmmaking techniques. The vibe they set really gives a sense of isolation to trying to eke a living out of the dusty soil. There are no bustling towns - only a humble homestead and a sliver of the surrounding wilderness. The old man…

    A Hologram for the King

    ★★

A Hologram for the King (2016) - I love Tom Hanks and I can watch just about anything he is in, but this one is nothing fantastic. At the start they were going for a standard fish out of water story with some kooky characters and coming together to get past misunderstanding which I always like, unfortunately the romantic subplot just derailed everything and totally took over.
