Presented as a double feature with the Umbrellas of Cherbourg for the last week leading up to the release of the criterion channel. This is one of John Woo's earlier films so there is no slow motion and not a dove to be seen. I have only seen a couple of these Chinese swordplay films. this one was supposedly near the end of the genre's popularity. Released after audiences were already getting tired of it. I have not gotten to that point yet though so it was cool to see it all restored. The colours are bright and the metal clangs are numerous. the plot is pretty good but it gets a little hokey with an exaggerated theme of friendship.
