this movie has everything: dancing, sondheim, knife fights, a racist butch lesbian

    The Matrix Resurrections

this is basically toy story 4. like if you think about it in those terms it becomes substantially better

    The Matrix Revolutions

what's interesting about the sequels, and especially this one, is how they shift away from the archetypal singular chosen one narrative and into collectivist heroism. it's not a change that always works for me but for a series as focused on subverting itself as this, it checks out politically and thematically. something else i noticed in this one: the series is generally surprisingly bloodless, especially in the actual matrix. like think about the burly brawl in reloaded, hundreds of fighters…

    The Matrix Reloaded

ugh god i would love to join that underground cave rave/fuck pile right about now. look this movie is fucked up and inherently flawed but also with every passing annual box office list with another eight soulless, drab, flat blockbusters at the top, i grow more respect for this type of bold craftsmanship, idiosyncratic vision, and oh yeah actual directing. it's just deeply human, something that is inexplicably mostly absent from movies nowadays.

gives me the same icky feeling as the first time i watched the original. my introduction to the matrix was in seventh grade, when the person who would end up being my best friend talked to me for really the first time in the first day of gym class. he started telling me about this crazy movie and how philosophical it is and how life is a computer. i couldn't wrap my head around it. i went home that afternoon…

the sheer exhaustion with which neo says "that's me" after being called thomas anderson... yeah sure nothing to read into there

cool movie about the eternal nature of the bro code

  • Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

    Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

i learned recently that rdj was circling the role of doc sportello until joaquin phoenix took it, which is interesting because this is basically inherent vice if it was actually the pulp cheese that pynchon was riffing on. anyways, good movie, i'm sad

    Moonrise Kingdom

a sickly-looking reckoning with aesthetic origins. anderson has long been obsessed with the sixties but this was his first to actually take place in the period. on this career rewatch, boy do i feel dumb for saying that The French Dispatch was his first to deal in nuance and substance.
