tick, tick...BOOM! ★★

Of the many things I find irritating about him, Lin Manuel Miranda’s inability to conceptualize history/the aesthetics and ideas of a moment without resorting to the most gaudy cliches often feels like the root of it all for me. Here he throws so many 90s signifiers at you—NIN stickers on the wall, vignettes of interlaced handycam footage, a head scratching digression with Black Thought parodying the look of 90s hip hop videos—yet it never stops feeling like the uniquely 2010s+ pablum I associate with him; a collection of gestures towards Representation so divorced from any sane historical perspective that I can’t help but find it cheap.

One day Andrew Garfield will be in a post-Silence movie I like.
