Static ★★★½

Very obscure debut for Romanek, who has all but denied its existence.   Not as “weird” as its reputation has suggested, this film about a troubled young man’s invention - a device that can “tune in Heaven” - works best as an examination of small town life.   Characters are observed with respect, not point and laugh condescension.

The final half hour takes a turn toward the satirical, with an unfortunate climax I doubt anyone would’ve expected.
