easily my favorite david fincher movie. just very entertaining, well made, well acted across the board, suspenseful, and KEY: doesn’t fall into a lot of the lurid traps that he seems to with his other later work.

i had to knock off at least a star because i found jim caviezel insufferable. his arc as a whole both bothered and bored me but with a different actor it could possibly have worked. and some of the (what could be characterized as) cameos were goofy. a shame because most of the rest of the movie was absolutely incredible - nolte and koteas are particularly amazing here, and the cinematography is of course impeccable.

a hell of a lot of fun, great dialogue, casting, kills, and sommers's self-conscious style elevate it a cut above being the alien(s) ripoff i guess it's been accused of being. i'd watch an entire film on the mercenary crew by itself, and idk, i really liked the little touches like the shotgun pumping at the end.

that said, the cgi is pretty awful, there's a bit of repetition in the last act, but its so damn entertaining for what it is that all that is forgivable. definitely deserves a better rep within the b movie canon.

cary hiroyuki tagawa steals the film, the whole movie needed to be as over the top as his performance. definitely stupid enough but not as much as you’d hope. love that fucking theme song though.
