11 x 14

11 x 14 ★★★★½

America inbetween the in-between, the bits and pieces that end up on the cutting room floor of any other film, any other documentary, and stitched together into an abstruse (but deeply profound) whole. 11 x 14 marks Benning's first feature-length film, and it's clear he's already mastered his craft in this portrayal of perimeters that stretch on forever, the transitional step between rural and suburban that seems to take on its own subdued existence. Liminal spaces as open as pastures, highways, billboards, even baseball fields, the space between spaces where nothing truly happens. Is there anything more American than the humdrum of the midwest?
