A giant, beautifully-wrapped candy-bar named named MeloDrama™ behind the window of your downtown boutique, All That Heaven Allows is a sappy, soapy, predictable experience, but I don't say that in a negative way at all; rather that's just the genre conventions at play.
A forbidden romance, extravagant strings, sumptuous Technicolor, "Once upon a time in New England...", it's like watching a live-action Disney movie set during the most idyllic of Christmases. Love wins in the end, at least in the movies.
"Cary, let's face it: you were ready for a love affair, but not for love."
