Striking. Its relatively predictable story is compensated by superb execution. Rides a razor thin line but never crosses over into melodrama. Riz Ahmed is electric.
Unsurprising I liked it so much given that Darius Marder was a writer on Place Beyond the Pines, and Derek Cianfrance co-wrote and produced Sound of Metal.
It's so peculiar watching the same characters nine years later in the world of the film and nine years later in real life too. This sense of dreams unfulfilled and grappling with the difference between fantasy and reality. That time is running out both in a small sense and in the bigger picture.
I'm brought back to the last Hawke movie I watched, First Reformed, in which I was specifically captivated by the line about remembering a time when everything was ahead of you.
