Builds and builds tension until the sense of despair that radiates of the film becomes almost unsurmountable, but the absurdly gorgeous visuals keep it from becoming a relentless slog through misery and the philosophical musings and questions raised within the dialogue made the story much more engaging than I expected from the outset. This also just has tons of images that will probably stay with me forever, most of them near the ending, a cast of actors with simply incredible faces and some of the best editing of sound and music cues this side of Kubrick. The heating in my room isn't great on the best of days, but I've never felt quite as chilly as I did watching this film.
