SATYAJIT RAY

My list of Ray’s works. His ‘Apu’ trilogy are minimalist masterpieces, focusing on rural poverty shot in the neo-realist style. There is great empathy shown for the down-trodden n impoverished in society. Not surprising he was greatly influenced by De Sica after watching, ‘Bicycle Thieves’. But other favourites are the ones that contain his long-time muse, the iridescent Madhabi Mukherjee in ‘Charulata’ (based on a Rabindranath Tagore novella), ‘Nayak’, ‘Kaparush’ n ‘Mahanagar’. Not forgetting his sumptuous otherworldly ‘Jalsaghar’ (‘The Music Room’) featuring the wonderful Chhabi Biswas who has no desire to relinquish his feudal past in the face of modern times.
