Immeasurably ticks all the boxes when it comes to chilling aesthetics and tenebrous ambience that denote a good horror. Also his criminally overlooked 'The Fog' needs to be mentioned. He assembled returning actors and new talent to bring this classic styled ghost story to life.
Another auteur with an interesting skillset was Clive Barker who took his novella, 'The Hellbound Heart', adapted it into a screenplay and finally directed the retitled 'Hellraiser'. A beautiful work of art, I watched as a teen when it was first released and the experience opened my eyes to a new era in horror.
