Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island ★★★

Weird movie in that it has to be a Showa Toho one (the Science Team embedded with the military! The island natives!) but also has to do the Heart of Darkness/Predator thing in a world where Apocalypse Now! and Forrest Gump are forgone conclusions. I think it does the best it could given those parameters? It also frequently looks great, Sam is able to pull off Captain Ahab with flair, Reilly is less annoying than usual, Loki makes for an almost convincing Ultimate Badass, and it really gets the rhythm right. We get a little human pathos, we get a little existential horror, we get a little kaiju fisticuffs, and we keep it moving. Sure, it’s WB doing the MCU, but there are fewer half-landed jokes and we get to see the monsters fight from their own vantage so I’m mostly fine with it, even if it rolls like water off a duck’s back.

I do have serious questions about infantrymen with bad ass hi-fi setups on Hueys playing Stooges records in ‘Nam, though.
