Yi Yi ★★★★★

Revisiting this easygoing epic straight after seeing Taipei Story for the first time was in theory a bit much, yet its familiarity and relative warmth actually took the edge off the earlier movie's astounding bleakness. Aesthetically I might prefer the neon '80s despair of young Edward Yang (see also The Terrorizers, though you'll have to hit up YouTube to do so). But the humourous, well-heeled, multi-generational sprawl of his award-winning swansong is just as emotionally acute. Yi Yi is mature in the best chamber music way, plus watching it in a (pleasingly packed out) cinema this time helped me better appreciate his amazing use of reflections. RIP.
