You know that feeling when you see a local bar band play like, a sped-up punk-rock Beatles cover or something? And it's like big and dumb and loud and and brash and absolutely unoriginal and unnecessary on almost every conceivable level — but still a ton of fun while it's happening??

Top Gun: Maverick is, in the words of the great American philosopher Chester Cheetah, "dangerously cheesy." It is also, like much of Mr. Cheetah's own work, "Flamin' Hot®," a tasty treat made with precision machinery and factory-grade quality assurance, delivered with absolutely no pretense. Blockbusters with this level of craftsmanship and confidence are a rarity these days — as Chester says, "It ain't easy" — and the fact that Maverick makes it look effortless is all the more reason to savor the ride.
