The Monster ★★½

Part Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr., part Poe’s “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether”, and part The Bat—there’s a lot going on, and it doesn’t all gel. It works best once the shenanigans in the sanitarium get underway, and there’s a phenomenal set piece involving a tightrope walk on power lines during a driving rain. Be prepared that it tries to adapt stage humor into silent film humor, an effort that is largely ineffective.
