Peter Rogers’s review published on Letterboxd:
God damn! I love Joaquin Phoenix! It's kind of a shame that we lost four years there with him doing I'm Still Here... because, man, this guy has talent!
I think 2012's The Master and 2013's Her have definitely lodged him as one of my most favourite film actors. The first being the subject of my review, what a wonderfully eery film. Phoenix is brilliantly complimented by an oddball collection of nutcases, quacks and cult followers, through the likes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.
This film is expertly shot, in only the way P.T. Anderson could do, and I love how he really manages to capture not only the look of post-World War II America, but also that sense of hollowness and brokenness that would have clung to men returning from such a terrible moment in history. They really struggle to look for something that helps them make meaning of the world.
The only question is, who is the Master, really...
