Before Midnight

Before Midnight ★★★★★

I had actually never seen Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004) and what eventually made me pursue watching them was the glowing reviews for the second sequel, Before Midnight. I remember watching the first two, one right after the other, after receiving them from Netflix, simply because Sunrise was so freaking fantastic and I was entirely satisfied to find Sunset had the same effect. Therefore, after reading the endless amounts of praise for this last one, I couldn't be more excited to see it.

One of my (obvious) favorite things about this trilogy is the amazing chemistry between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. There's not one moment in all three films where I don't completely believe they are the characters Jesse and Celine. They are both so incredibly natural in the roles and it almost feels more like a continuous documentary about two regular people who happened to fall in love. The extended takes of their intriguing discussions also helps that aspect of the films. Richard Linklater is a remarkable dude, it's impressive when a guy can write (love how Hawke and Delpy also had their parts in writing the sequels too) and direct three films about two people over the course of almost two decades - and each separate film is sensational in every way.

Although I absolutely love how Before Midnight ends, there is a small part of me that would love to see Jesse and Celine again in the future; just to put my mind at ease knowing that they're still present in each others lives.
