Ricardo Franco’s review published on Letterboxd:
The visual effects are incredible and I sobbed in my seat during Mufasa’s death, but there’s no way I’d ever watch this over the original.
The voice cast is all fine, they all have good moments and some subpar ones, the only standout performance came from James Earl Jones and well he’s had some practice.
My biggest problem with this version is that nothing is better than it is in the orginal. It feels rather bland. The animated version is more colorful, it’s better paced. This is especially true for the musical numbers, there’s 2 or 3 where it’s literally just lions standing around while music plays in the back.
I love Jon Favreu and I think he did a good job, but the original is too iconic and this never feels up to par.
