Ricardo Franco’s review published on Letterboxd:
I enjoyed this way more this time around. It’s my second viewing and I’m not sure if it’s because I went in with low expectations, or because I’ve learned to appreciate well directed action a bit more.
I really enjoy the first half of this movie. It’s cerebral and strange, and incredible example in how to build a believable world. The second half is also very good, but it’s paced a bit awkwardly and I think it loses a bit of the mystique of the first half.
The entire cast is great and it’s rare to see more than one character become instant classics. This movie also has that end of history late 90’s vibe to it, and I love that, I’m starting to think it’s a key reason as to why 99’ was the amazing year for film that it was.
The Wachowskis have had an interesting career, and though they don’t always nail it (Jupiter Ascending) they always take risks, and that’s more than what can be said about most directors, especially in this budget range. Also Speed Racer is an underrated gem.
