What better character or franchise could be used to so beautifully illustrate the power of the people? To show that the only way to solve the problem is through community and collective action in the face of sure destruction? To demonstrate the honor in truly doing the right thing for the right reason? To remind you that the ultimate sacrifice means the most not when operating on the fact that you may die, but that taking that risk is your…

Chicago International Film Festival - 2 of 5

Almost ambitious to a fault. Almost. It took a while for me to fully open myself to this one, or vice versa I don’t really know. In my opinion this is by far his least accessible movie, but unsurprisingly we are still in good hands. The master guides us to a conclusion that ties together all of the disparate stitches made through the fabric of space and time in this movie into…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Honestly fuck Goku. Me and all of the homies love Gohan’s real dad.

A pretty mediocre movie with an insane amount of boring exposition that is only just outweighed by the truly wonderful jokes, character moments and action that is also provided. Things that made the whole movie worth it:

    - The way Piccolo holds his phone
    - Piccolo “never getting his license”
    - Piccolo and Pan fist bumping
    - Gohan using Special Beam Cannon to take out the big bad because of course he’s been practicing that move in secret his whole life

First time checking a movie out from the library!

Dune Part 2: The Ascension of Paul Atreides

When the pendulum swings, it swings back hard. Feels entirely different from Part 1. Breakneck. Hilarious. Unimaginably thrilling. It felt like I was watching an action movie. It may not be perfect, but Dune: Part 2 is science fiction filmmaking of unprecedented scale and craft, imbued with the spirit of a warrior. I was consistently gasping and catching myself with a huge smile on my face, cracking up at how exciting and…

If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change anything?

This movie is maybe one of the only things powerful enough to make me confidently answer “no”. Still breathtaking. The first meeting with the heptapods filled me with true terror and the end made me cry with ease. Perfect film.

Watched with headphones on this time, volume cranked up, and the sound in this movie is INSANE.

I’ve seen this before back when it first hit DVD, but tonight I might as well have been watching it for the first time. I remembered nothing about this other than being confused and thinking that Emily Blunt was wasted in it. And while her character is treated like absolute shit, she surely is not wasted here. She is fucking terrific. MVP is Benicio though, that man fucking owns this movie.

Really worked for me this time around. A bone-chilling…
