What a great depiction of the horrors of war and the dual nature of men. It was an even better experience for me after watching the Vietnam war documentary by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Give THAT a try if you want to sour your (probably already) dark view of politicians and the U.S. Government.
If you're not a huge fan of David Lynch I've heard this movie might be frustrating. It's very surreal and dream-like and the plot is pretty murky, but as a fan, I love it. I think it's way up there in my top favorite films of his. There are just so many memorable scenes and the dialogue is delightfully bizarre. It's really gripping if your patient enough with it. Also, Laura Dern's performance is amazing, but that should go without saying.
