This is perhaps a career-best performance from Meryl, Stanley Tucci is on fire, Emily Blunt is so charming that she somehow makes us like a character that should’ve been unbelievably grating, and yet I still wouldn’t say I “loved this.”

It’s very weird, this movie. Andy (Anne Hathaway, for those who aren’t Devilheads) is such an inert lead character, just tossed in the wind like a leaf, always reacting, never really making a choice. It’s like the studio or director…

A series about a bunch of post-apocalyptic theater nerds has overcome everything that description should mean and made me utterly weep.

The stakes in this movie are absolutely nonexistent. “Will Lucille Ball be permanently blacklisted?” Um, no? Famously duh? So then all that’s left is to care about character, but half the scenes that should be between Lucy and Dezi are just Lucy talking about Dezi with other people. There’s very little that draws us into their relationship or heightens the tension between them. It’s all just claustrophobic standing around on 2 sets as a bunch of boring, ill-defined people banter…
