    Hooptober 5.0 - Film #26

eXistenZ posits a universe in which the MOST popular videogame is about a mutant trout farm where you harvest fish guts and assassinate waiters with tooth bullets from your disgusting drippy skeleton gun. Maybe in that world eXistenZ would’ve been a huge hit, but in our world it’s just a delightfully bizarre and under appreciated meta-thriller about the nature of reality in the age of VR. It feels prescient in some ways and less so in others, but as a filmic experience it is a wild, twisty, frequently disgusting ride well worth taking.

It’s the nature of anthology films to be kind of underwhelming, and this one is unfortunately no exception. The first two stories have great premises but are both extremely frustrating, the third is a serviceable but generic “monster kills people” exercise, and the last one from
Karyn Kusama is an engaging if kinda silly riff on the “demon child” trope. Pretty disappointing overall.

    Hooptober 5.0 - Film #2

Giallo films aren’t exactly known for their great storytelling and character development. Even the best ones compensate for their throwaway plots with breathtaking style and staging. Torso is similarly lacking in the story department, but more often than not relies on nudity to maintain viewer interest. There are definitely a few memorable sequences, but it ultimately feels a little too much like a porno. All for artful titillation, but the director’s horniness in this case is just distracting.

Haven’t seen this in a few years and it still holds up beautifully. I always forget how patient and simple it is. Hard to overstate how much the music adds. It wouldn’t be remotely the same experience without it.

I’ve only seen a handful of the sequels and none of the remakes, but I’m looking forward to the new one coming out. Also, The Ringer just released an 8-part podcast series all about the franchise, so I’m excited to take a deep dive.
