"This is not going to go the way you think!"

This is what I want Star Wars to be. Strong character driven movies. From that point of view, I think this is easily the best of the franchise. I loved how Johnson played with our expectations around what I thought I wanted from these films.

The main thrust of the story centres around the relationship between Kylo, Rey and Luke and how they impact each other. Kylo and Rey are…

“If Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.”

What a fantastic film this remains after 25 years.

Take that opening twenty minutes or so. The film opens on a new dinosaur being moved into captivity when it breaks loose and a park worker loses his life. That opening three minutes creates the right amount of tension, mystery and intrigue to propel the film forward. Mostly because we never get a full reveal of what these…

    ★★★½

“Take a step, step again. It is all that I can to do the next right thing”

Will die on the hill saying Do The Next Right Thing is the best song of Frozen II. Taking the time to examine Anna’s grief and how you can continue after suffering such an incredible loss is a great thing to see in an animated Disney movie. Elsa gets all the headlines from these films but the film never forgets that it’s about both sisters…

“This is not a shoe. This is disorder. This is size 10 chaos.”

Still great. Bong Joon-Ho crafts some really gorgeous shots and gets arguably Chris Evans’ best performance. The world they build is fantastic and horrible and they never stop revealing new things about it yet, Bing never lets it’s feel like exposition for the sake of the it. It always feels like what we learn pushes the story forwards. And who does t live a film where we see Tilda Swinton doing a broad Yorkshire accent?

    Ad Astra

    ★★★★

    “We are world eaters.”

Throughout Ad Astra, I kept thinking that the whole plot is almost like a cheesy sci-fi movie from the ‘90s. It got space pirates, trips across the solar system, creepy maydays from other ships and some weird sci-fi goings on on Neptune. In another directors hands, this is a schlocky straight-to-dvd film. James Gray takes this almost B-movie plot and elevates it by making all that stuff secondary. In the end, the sci-fi stuff is a…

    Knives Out

    ★★★★½

“This is a twisted web, and we are not finished untangling it, not yet.”

Been anticipating Rian Johnson’s latest and it certainly did not disappoint. Johnson crafts a wonderful whodunnit that, for my money, kept me guessing right until the very end.

There’s a glut of phenomenal performances here as well. Daniel Craig plays the enigmatic Benoit Blanc and he’s brilliant. He knows how to play every scene whether it’s for a laugh or delivering the final explanation. He’s great…
