    The Avengers

    “There was an idea...”

Look, I just love this movie. Nobody shoots these characters the same way that Whedon does and they’ve never looked better than they do here. It’s still startles me how much of the MCU is indebted to this movie, half the Avengers are defined by this film and even Thanos makes his debut!

It’s just such a joy to watch this film. I’m going to keep going to it over the years to come and keep falling in love with it.

    Jurassic Park

“If Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.”

What a fantastic film this remains after 25 years.

Take that opening twenty minutes or so. The film opens on a new dinosaur being moved into captivity when it breaks loose and a park worker loses his life. That opening three minutes creates the right amount of tension, mystery and intrigue to propel the film forward. Mostly because we never get a full reveal of what these…

    The Irishman

    “I heard you paint houses.”

The Irishman is Martine Scorsese flexing. It’s Scorsese being given millions of dollars and really showing what he is still capable of. This isn’t just a gangster movie, it’s a gangster movie where Scorsese is still trying and mastering new filmmaking techniques, namely the de-aging technology on display here. Like most films that have utilised this new tech, at the very start, it looks a little iffy but very quickly it becomes normal and looks…

  • Klaus

“A true selfless act always sparks another.“

It’s basically Santa Claus: Begins but it tells the story in a charming way, weaving in all the usual Santa Claus myths as it goes. The best thing Klaus has going for it is the gorgeous blend of 2D and 3D animation that it utilities. Some really stunning images that take advantage to the medium. I could stand to see more animated movies using something akin to this technique.

    Knives Out

“This is a twisted web, and we are not finished untangling it, not yet.”

Been anticipating Rian Johnson’s latest and it certainly did not disappoint. Johnson crafts a wonderful whodunnit that, for my money, kept me guessing right until the very end.

There’s a glut of phenomenal performances here as well. Daniel Craig plays the enigmatic Benoit Blanc and he’s brilliant. He knows how to play every scene whether it’s for a laugh or delivering the final explanation. He’s great…

  • Ad Astra

    Ad Astra

    “We are world eaters.”

Throughout Ad Astra, I kept thinking that the whole plot is almost like a cheesy sci-fi movie from the ‘90s. It got space pirates, trips across the solar system, creepy maydays from other ships and some weird sci-fi goings on on Neptune. In another directors hands, this is a schlocky straight-to-dvd film. James Gray takes this almost B-movie plot and elevates it by making all that stuff secondary. In the end, the sci-fi stuff is a…
