Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ★★★★

"So much for a "little training cruise"."

Has all the emotional weight that Into Darkness thinks it has. This does the classic thing that sequels do, makes it about the villain. Khan is great advisory for the crew of the Enterprise and, primarily, for Kirk himself. Even having never seen the original show, you get the idea of a shared history between these characters and Khan that pays off wonderfully.
The end is a gut punch and works really well.
