I haven't read the book because I am an unwashed heathen.
I haven't seen previous versions of Little Women because I am uncultured swine.
That said, this movie very clearly relied on viewers already knowing the source material. It moved incredibly fast, jumped throughout timelines (I think there were three?) very rapidly (and at times the timelines didn't have much to separate them other than whether the light was warm or cold), and didn't spend a lot of time developing characters.
Mr. Lawrence goes from the cranky, mean old neighbor to family friend and benefactor in all of 3 minutes, or at least it felt like it.
I chuckled a few times, I shed a few tears, but I wasn't absolutely wowed. A good movie worth seeing.
