End the music biopic. It ain’t getting better than this.
But seriously, Baz Luhrmann really came through with Elvis. While his abrasive and maximalist style may not work in all his works, it’s really paid off here in portraying a ridiculous glorification of the life and career of Elvis Presley through the eyes of the glorification that has all but engulfed his entire being. Austin Butler is wonderful as The King, but Tom Hanks is absolutely mesmerizing as the sluggish yet manipulative Colonel Parker—I swear it’s the most chameleon-like performance he’s done as of recent. Fantastic time.
