Anna and the Apocalypse ★★★

Really impressed how the back half of this manages to be genuinely affecting and melancholy rather than cutesy -- although part of the reason I'm impressed is that the screenwriters have almost no sense of rhythm of dialogue or human observation or even just good joke-writing.

Similarly, the musical numbers are pretty good...considering almost all of them are shot in that weird hyperreal Gladiator-era Ridley Scott low frame rate, which makes the choreography look like it's being fudged, even when it's very good!

A mixed bag, this one, then, and GOD HELP THE GIRL's status as the best scrappy English/Scottish musical remains UNCHALLENGED.
